“Don’t bore us, get to the chorus.” — Tom Petty
Pertinent details only, please.
If you’re telling a story, make it punchy. Don’t talk about superfluous details, only what matters to the story’s unfolding.
With comedy, get to the punchline already, unless of course, you’re gifted in the area of storytelling, and then I’ll sit down over a bourbon and give you a listen.
I think all too often we’ve settled for mediocre storytellers just by the sheer volume of content created these days — it’s everywhere we turn.
It’s okay to be discerning and not listen to that podcast or audio book if it’s bad — we’ve had these rules for years in the visual entertainment arenas of television (changing the channel) and not finishing books (is there really any other way?!?)
In this day and age, we need more clear and succinct communication — people don’t read, people don’t listen, people only pay attention to what suits them — it’s okay, just be clear, direct and succinct with your communication style. Take time to dive deep in the appropriate contexts: conversations with loved ones, listening to a friend, etc.
